Chicago - USA

Chicago is the third largest town of the USA with a population of 2,896,000. Chicago also is called The Windy City in the people mouth.

Story of Chicago

Thanks to the convenient situation at the water transport routes of the Michigansees, one of the large lakes, and the Chicago Rivers the trade position gained visibly meaning by the beginning of the 19th century. When Illinois 1818 joined the USA and therefore should be deduced concerning traffic engineering better the east west railroad therefore attained Chicago the reputation as a "gate to the west" fast after the making. Chicago was the most important trading center far and broadly for raw materials and agricultural products now. Wood came from the north with ships and they were reselling on the spot or further transporting with the train and food brought the farmers on the markets, where it then could be reloaded and transported without problems on ships or trains in turn. These were produced on the spot not or in an insufficient crowd, in turn came from the east tools and other materials. So the trade position turned into a village. 1837 1833 became Chicago founded officially and already four years late, Chicago was raised to the town with its 4200 inhabitants.

As of now it worked fast. More and more people moved on into the town and the trade already minted anyway was further driven which attracted still more immigrants. The land prices rose rapidly. For three years they shall have doubled daily. The 1836 construction of a connection channel was finished between the Chicago River and the Mississippi 1848, there was another extremely attractive traffic route as started. Six states southern along the Mississippi as well as three northern and regions along the Missouri leading into the Mississippi were deduced by a broad waterway in addition now. The Chicago River doesn't lead into the Michigansee because of the channel since then any more but into the Mississippi.

1850 had Chicago already 30,000 inhabitants and an end of the inflow wasn't foreseeably too convenient the framework conditions were at the traffic junction of the USA. The great fire of Chicago which destroyed the large part of the town raged between October 8th and 10th, 1871. But the town was rebuilt quickly. Architects like Louis Sullivan and late also Frank Lloyd Wright came into the town which served as an experimenting country for urban innovations now. 1880 counted the "reborn" city of already 500,000 inhabitants.
