New York - USA

New York is the largest town of the USA. To distinguish it of the state of New York, it also is called New York city center unofficially.

Story of New York

1615 arise a colonial station of the Dutch East India company at the south head of Manhattan. The trade in skins with the Indians proves to be extremely lucrative so that the Dutch west India company is founded 1621. At 1625 about 30 walloon families receive the permission the Dutch west India company to establish himself here, Nieuw Amsterdam is called the settlement now and new low country turns capital of the colony. There were chaotic conditions in the settlement founded newly soon. Under the rule of corrupt governors the crime increased enormously. The Dutch Westindien company decided to provide order 1647 again. This task should take Peter Stuyvesant. The first hospital, first prison and the first school were built during his 17-year period of office as a governor. As protection from attacks he had an embankment in the south of the town crossways over the island which gave its name to the street running there later deposited, Wall Street. 1664 became conquered by the Englishmen and in honor of the brother of the English king, duke James of York, the town, renamed in New York.

In the 18th century New York was involved in the independence movement actively. It was the headquarters George Washingtons for short time, 1776 was then occupied by the brits, however. The brits exited the city of only 1783 after inclusively Great Britain was recognized also by European states the American independence. New York was capital of the USA from 1788 to 1790. George Washington became swornly 1789 as the first president here. 1792 became founded the New York stock exchange in the economically difficult times after the war.

At the beginning of the 19th century the town grew faster than ever. 1811 decided to cover the city planners, the whole island of Manhattan by which only the south top was built on, with a rasterförmigen road network. The only exception was and is to this day Broadway.

A turning point in the history of the town was the completion of the Eriekanals 1825. through it became a connection between New York, the large lakes and with that the middle west created. The town became the greatest Warenumschlagsplatz at the American East coast overnight. The planning started for a large municipal park, the so-called Central park, in the middle of the 19th century. 1858 started with the construction work for this and 1866 were completed for the most part.

The electrical power of the immigrants increased steadily in second half of the 19th century. Irishmen, Italians, Germans, everyone came in the hope for a better life but most spent many years in slum dwellings in slum quarters like Five points and the Bowery. Conflicts partly unloaded themselves forcibly like in the Draft Riotss which threw the town into the greatest chaos of their history. By the strong growth the administration had to be changed.

The five municipal districts five boroughs combined -- Manhattan, Brooklyn, Richmond (Staten Iceland), Queens and the Bronx -- 1898 to Greater New York. The Bronx partly was part of the municipal area of New York already as of 1874. Brooklyn was already one of the largest towns of the country before the association. The individual districts have kept a certain independence both in the administration and in the conception of oneself of its residents to this day. So Little Italy is the expression for a district which is primarily lived in by Italian sturdy Americans, for example.
