Zagreb - Croatia
The city of Zagreb is the capital of Croatia. Zagreb lies at the foot of the Medvednica mountains on the two pages of the Save in the southwest of the Pannonische lowland plain. The emblem of the town is the cathedral. The town is seat of a Roman Roman Catholic archbishop.
Story of Zagreb
The name Zagreb was mentioned to the erstenmal in 1094 when the Hungarian Croatian King Ladislaus I. had founded the Zagreber diocese. Zagreb indicates "at the ditch" what the German "Agram" was derived from later. The town developed from the two settlements, Kaptol and Gradec which form the core of the old town Zagrebs today. Merchants and workmen had established themselves in Gradec. Kaptol was a town of the clergy in which the Kanoniker of the Zagreber diocese lived. In the 13th century had to suffer from devastating lootings of the Asian Tartars. He awarded 1242 the Bulla Aurea from gratitude for his rescue to the inhabitants of Gradec. By this document Gradec became the free royal town. The Bulla Aurea was a symbol of the liberty and independence. Gradec experienced its economic flower now. Beautiful palaces, churches and fastening plants after means and western european example which give the town a romantic atmosphere certainly today, were made.
Zagreb was mentioned for the first time 1557 as a croatia's capital. The lower part of the town also started to develop fast and took on the role of Gradec soon in trade and skilled crafts. 1850 became the two cities of Gradec and Kaptol united and with the lower part of the town in conjunction to the city of Zagreb. A serious earthquake caused 1880 considerable one damage, also made a modernization and dynamic further development of the town possible, however.
Kaptol is the center of the roman catholic church and the spiritual life in croatia to this day. Gradec, called upper town today, became the political and administrative center. The Croatian parliament decided on the abolition of all relations of national law between Croatia and the Austrian Hungarian monarchy in Zagreb on October 29th, 1918. The Tito partisans march in into Zagreb on May 8th, 1945. Croatia is incorporated into the communist Yugoslavian people's republic after that.
1970 - 1971: The center of the resistance to the communist regime is in Zagreb. Demonstrations find it central government against the policy of the inhabitants of Belgrade instead of, the Croatian spring is knocked down and ends with mass arrests.
A Yugoslavian and a British airplane collided about Zagreb on September 10th, 1976. The accident claimed 176 dead bodies, of this 27 Germans.
The Universiade takes place in Zagreb in 1987. In 1990 the thirty-fifth grand Prix pursued by 500 million viewers took this place Eurovision de in Zagreb ' La song.
The first session of the first Croatian parliament chosen democratically takes place on May 30th, 1990. The Croatian parliament explains the independence and sovereignty to the Croatian republic on June 25th, 1991. Zagreb becomes the capital.
